2010 Lipton Cup Results
The 2010 Lipton Cup took place June 19 and 20 in Port Madison, sailing out of the Port Madison Yacht Club. Saturday dawned cold and cloudy with a 10-12 knot southerly getting thoroughly stirred as it passed over the Bainbridge Island Land features. In these conditions 20 degree wind shifts and velocity changes were common, nearly eliminating any speed advantage between the generations of Sixes represented. The exception was the first race where Arunga simply powered away from the scrum in the medium conditions to a commanding win. Generally, however, the keys to victory were to keep your head out of the boat and on the puffs moving across the water. This is reflected in the closeness of the scores at the end of 5 races on Saturday with Arunga 10, Flapper 12, Finnegan 15, Lulu 17, and Sockeye 21. Sunday was even colder yet and the wind speed dropped to 0 - 5 knots with light rain and mist. And the conditions were even more spotty. Flapper wins the first race. In the second Finnegan is again over early, splits from the fleet on the run and connects the dots gybing from the left side of the course to the right in very light air. She carries her speed past the becalmed fleet to round second and on to eventually win the race.
In the end Arunga wins the Lipton Cup with 16 points. Owner Bob Cadranell adds his name to the trophy for the second time in 30 years, sailing on Warhorse in 1980. Second is a much improved and thoroughly buffed Flapper from Newport, Rhode Island owned by Nick Booth. She is in the Northwest for the summer so as to not discourage her home fleet I would guess.Very fast and well sailed, she passed the moderns Finnegan and Arunga for the lead on two separate runs. Third was Andy Parker's Finnegan. Fourth was Lulu. This is the first regatta for Lulu in several decades. She is owned by Craig Downey and is an astoundingly fast and well turned out mid thirties Stephens design. Fifth was Norlin modern Sockeye owned by Pat Mitchell with three podium finishes for the Regatta.
